4-Week Ceramics Program
A month to slow down, get your hands dirty, and explore what you can create with clay.
There’s something special about working with clay. It’s tactile, playful, and a little unpredictable, you start with a simple lump of earth and, through your hands, slowly turn it into something completely your own.
Over four weeks, this program is an introduction to the world of ceramics and the many ways you can shape, build, decorate, and experiment with clay. You’ll learn the fundamental hand-building techniques while having plenty of space to explore your own ideas and develop your personal style.
We’ll work with pinch, coil, slab, and hollowing techniques, creating around 4–6 pieces throughout the course. From functional objects to more sculptural and challenging forms like jugs and small sculptures, each week will bring something new to try.
We’ll also explore the fun part that comes after building: making your pieces your own. You’ll experiment with underglazes and different painting techniques, discover how glazes transform the surface of your work, and learn how to finish your pieces ready for the final firing.
No previous ceramics experience is needed, just come ready to experiment, get a little messy, and see where the clay takes you.
All materials, tools, underglazes, and glazes are included in the course fee of CHF 360.
What we’ll do
Week 1 — Getting to know clay
An introduction to ceramics and hand-building, followed by pinch and coil techniques. We’ll start creating our first pieces and get comfortable working with clay.
Week 2 — Building with slabs
Explore the slab-building technique and start creating more structured forms. We’ll also begin decorating some of the pieces from Week 1 using underglazes.
Week 3 — Shape, structure & surface
An introduction to hollowing and more sculptural forms, while finishing our slab-built pieces. We’ll experiment with different ways of painting and decorating clay.
Week 4 — Finishing touches
Time to bring everything together: finishing and decorating your pieces, experimenting with engobes, and learning the basics of glazing. You’ll glaze at least two finished works to take through their final firing.
